EDIBLE

Last night we were part of the opening preview of the science gallery's latest exhibtion EDIBLE. The show consists of wonderful experiments with food featuring the likes of Seattle Food Geek and his wall of centrifuged fruits & vegetables. Julian abraham & his fermentation madness, it is an incredible exhibition.

For the preview party we were asked to do a multi sensory event using sound and jelly. We had three different jellys and three sounds. We asked guests to listen to all three sounds and pick the most appetising one, essentially tasting with their ears. We told nobody what was in any of the jellies and we are putting it up here for people to find out. We have also posted the sounds below so they can listen again.

The three jellies were,
Sparkling lemon & thyme with white chocolate

Rhubard & custard

Roasted beetroot, walnut & honey, with black pepper parsnip crisps

This was the first of two events we will be doing in the science gallery over the course of EDIBLE, the second will be a curated supper club where we will interpret the tastes of Dublin through design & food, we will be working on this with honorary goat, barista/chef Peter Williams.

Multi Sensory Event

As part of Design Week in Dublin, last night we hosted a multi sensory design event which was based around our continuing work with sound and food design. We invited 150 to take part in the event and the place was full. Guests were welcomed in the door with a jelly and a beer. There was a choice of two jellies at the door, a mango and chilli and a bluberry prosecco, which was had with a Tiger beer.

Guests were then guided to the centre of the room there were 4 speaker boxes, each playing different piece of music, the music was designed to represent a flavour of jelly. Each speaker box was marked on the underside by a graphic.

After listening to the music guests were asked to pick their favourite, or the most appetising sound. They were then given one of four jellies. None of the flavours were mentioned as we wanted everyone to guess and use their senses, starting with their hearing.

MASS MoCA in north adams massachusetts, will be showing fredrico diaz’s
‘geometric death frequency—141’, a sculpture made from 420,000 black spheres made and assembled by
robotics. the final sculpture will measure 20 feet by 50 feet and sit in the courtyard of the museum. the installation is precisely crafted from robotics, milling and assembling the entire sculpture sphere by sphere, completely void of any human interaction. diaz developed this process for building on his own using CAD software and manufacturing techniques along with pure data and algorithms based on particle physics. with this system each sculpture is completely untouched by human hands from concept to materialization.

IDEO have re-designed the ATM with BBVA a spanish bank. Rather than approach the design from a feature perspective IDEO and BBVA worked to rethink the interaction from the human perspective. their research led them to design a machine that is turned 90 degrees from the surface on which it is mounted to give the user more privacy. the whole system is also now operated from a 19-inch touchscreen display that allows more intuitive control over the process. outside the screen, there is only a single slot for cash, statements and receipts with a card slot to keep the interface streamlined.

Im not sure about the semi transparent plastic though.

This range, 'Down Side Up' by fabrica is an encounter between experimentation and consumption, where design challenges shapes, volume perception and directions to create objects with constantly varying functions and interpretations.

By adding a few essential accessories like legs, handles, hooks or hands, and by choosing a precise orientation, a simple basic wood unit has been transformed into something new with a unique personality.

These pieces are on show at the venice biennal.

42°Raw is a wonderful copenhagen salad bar, serving unique salads and smoothies. Some salads contain odd mixes such as watermelon and beetroot, strawberry and olive, avocado and cherry tomato which comes with a high tech powdered dressing which melts into an amazing vinaigrette. The food has been designed by danish chefs and food designers, I am Kombo (detailed post on their work is coming soon).

the interior is as tasty as the food, with tiered like seating, with cushions from hay give the place a more homely atmosphere and the smell of fresh fruit fills the room and the street outside.

Autarky is a series of vessels & lampshades made using the simplest materials and techniques by two eindhoven based Italian designers, Formafantasma. The pieces are made from 70 percent flour, 20 percent agricultural waste and 10 percent natural limestone, and then naturally dried or heated at a low temperature. The finished material weighs less than ceramic. Colours are created using dyes from vegetables and spices such as paprika and cinnamon. Cinnamon has a strangely good reaction with the materials, it makes it more elastic and less crackable.

The Statistical Clock checks the BBC website for technologically mediated fatalities: car, train, plane, etc, and pulls them into a database. Each technology has its own channel. The clock checks it every minute or so, and each time it finds a new one it speaks it out loud... 1, 2, 3, etc.

sexual obsessive compulsive disorder

S.O.C.D (Sexual Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is for people who enjoy porn but feel a bit guilty watching it, or think that it's wrong. You put a DVD into the black box and hold onto the rubber part of the object which is shiny and soft, a bit like a dildo. The metal bands sense your level of arousal and pixelate the image accordingly in real time. The more aroused you become, the bigger the pixel size, and the more distorted the sound gets. If you let go the film goes blank. To enjoy your video, you need to hold on but try to de-arouse yourself.

On a recent trip to london i had the pleasure of a coffee tour of east london with Rob Dunne, (the floating barista), experienced the wonders of Penny University where filter or syphon rules all and you can truly experience the quality of the coffee.

great coffee, wonderfully simple interiors and the most beautiful equipment youll ever see.
Prufrock is the brainchild of Gwilym Davies who is one of the reigning world barista champions. The coffee bar serving Square Mile coffee, is one of the best suppliers of coffee and equipment. The store is all about the coffee, the clothes and its quality. The store doesn’t have seats as it isn’t a café but you can sit on the bench outside the shop if you’re looking to relax.

Japanese firm, Schemata Architecture Office have taken an antique table and poured a pink epoxy resin over the top. Shallow areas of the original table are transparent due to the reduced thickness of the epoxy. An interesting mix of old and new materials.

Anyway, I've been looking for a good backpack for a while now that I can carry my life around in. There's a lot of choice out there when it comes to carrying things but these bags stood out a mile for their durability, functionality, aesthetics and price!!

Zugster is a one-man San Fransisco based operation that makes custom bags of all sorts for bag perverts like myself. The one that stood out the most was the backpack:

'I covered the spoon with different layers of silicone (pink) in various textures. in this way it seems as if the spoons are covered with cake batter. I like the possibility of silicone making a very textured surface, playing with this idea. it gives the spoons a less slick appearance. food itself is seldom slick.' - marije vogelzang

a television. the project is designed by jørn knutsen, einar sneve martinussen and timo arnall.
skal, norwegian for bowl, centers around a wooden bowl that is equipped with an RFID reader.
the bowl links to a television which displays different content when different RFID enabled objects
are place in the bowl. for example, when a small plush toy is placed in the bowl, it could activate
a cartoon with that same character in it. in addition to video, skal can be programmed to control all
kinds of digital media including youtube channels, flickr photo streams, home videos or even online
radio stations.
